Our Yard Drainage Solutions

Our video pipe inspection services reveal the true condition of your drainage system:

French Drain Installation

A French drain is a gravel-filled trench containing a perforated pipe. Water enters the pipe through the perforations, flows through the gravel, and is carried away to a discharge point. We design French drain systems to intercept water before it causes problems. Strategic placement along foundation walls, at the base of slopes, or across yard low spots captures water and redirects it effectively.

Our French drain installation includes proper trenching (typically 12-18 inches deep), landscape fabric to prevent soil infiltration, quality perforated pipe (4-inch diameter for most residential applications), clean gravel fill for good water flow, and connection to appropriate discharge points. We plan each system based on your specific property conditions, water volumes, and discharge options.

Catch Basin Installation

Catch basins are grated collection boxes placed at ground level in low spots where water naturally collects. Water flows through the grate into the basin, then exits through a pipe leading to your drainage system. We install catch basins in strategic locations to capture standing water quickly.

Catch basins work well in driveways, patios, low yard corners, and areas where French drains alone aren't sufficient. The visible grate allows fast water collection, and the basin includes a sediment trap to prevent debris from entering your drainage pipes.

Channel Drains and Trench Drains

Channel drains (also called trench drains) are linear surface drains ideal for driveways, walkways, and patio edges. These long, narrow drains with grated tops capture water flowing across surfaces. We install channel drains where sheet flow needs to be intercepted before it creates problems.

Channel drains work particularly well at the base of slopes, across driveway approaches, along patio edges where water would otherwise flow toward your foundation, and in garage entrances to keep water from entering the garage.

Downspout Extensions and Pop-Up Emitters

Your roof collects enormous amounts of water during Houston storms. Downspouts must discharge this water well away from your foundation—not right next to your home. We install underground extensions that carry downspout water to French drains, dry wells, or yard edges.

Pop-up emitters provide a clean discharge point for underground drainage pipes. These spring-loaded caps sit flush with your lawn when not in use but pop up when water flows, allowing drainage without unsightly exposed pipe ends.

Grading and Slope Correction

Proper grading is the foundation of good drainage. Your yard should slope away from your home at a rate of at least 1 inch per foot for the first 6-10 feet. We re-grade problem areas to create proper drainage away from structures. This often involves adding fill soil, smoothing low spots, and establishing positive drainage flow paths.

Common Yard Drainage Problems in Houston

Problem 01

Standing Water After Rain

The most obvious sign of poor drainage is water standing in your yard for hours or days after rainfall. This typically occurs in low spots where water naturally collects but has no path to drain away. Clay soil prevents the water from soaking in, leaving puddles that only disappear through evaporation.

Problem 03

Foundation Water Pooling

Water collecting next to your home's foundation is particularly problematic. This water can seep into crawl spaces, cause foundation settlement, create basement moisture problems, and damage foundation walls over time. Redirecting water away from the foundation is critical for protecting your home's structural integrity.

Problem 05

Flooded Flower Beds and Landscaping

Decorative beds and landscaping often become water collection points. Most ornamental plants don't tolerate wet feet—their roots rot in constantly saturated soil. Poor drainage kills your landscaping investment and creates constant maintenance problems.

Problem 02

Soggy or Muddy Lawns

Even without visible standing water, poor drainage creates constantly moist soil. Your lawn feels spongy when walked on, shoes sink into muddy ground, and grass struggles to grow healthy roots in waterlogged soil. These conditions promote fungal diseases and create unusable yard space.

Problem 04

Erosion Problems

Heavy Houston rainfall creates runoff that can erode soil, wash away mulch and topsoil, create gullies and channels in your yard, and damage landscaping beds. Proper drainage controls this water flow before erosion begins.

Problem 06

Driveway and Patio Flooding

Water flowing across driveways and patios is messy and potentially damaging. It can undermine paving, wash debris onto concrete surfaces, and make areas unusable. Proper drainage keeps hardscapes dry and functional.

Why Proper Yard Drainage Is Critical in Houston

Houston receives an average of 50+ inches of rainfall annually, with periods of intense storms that can dump several inches in hours. When your property can't drain this water effectively, it creates serious problems. Standing water kills grass and plants, breeds mosquitoes, undermines foundations, and makes yards unusable after every rain.

Houston's dense clay soil makes drainage problems worse. Clay has poor permeability—it doesn't allow water to soak in quickly. Instead, water pools on the surface or moves very slowly through the clay. This is why Houston yards often stay soggy for days after heavy rain, even when neighboring areas with better drainage have already dried out.

Proper yard drainage protects your most valuable investment—your home. Water pooling near your foundation can infiltrate crawl spaces and basements, cause foundation settlement and cracking, create humidity problems that promote mold growth, and damage landscaping through erosion and root rot. A well-designed drainage system redirects water before these problems develop.

French drains are one of the most effective yard drainage solutions for Houston properties. These underground drainage systems collect water before it pools on the surface and channel it to appropriate discharge points. Combined with proper grading, French drains can transform a waterlogged yard into a functional, enjoyable outdoor space.
